The Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) has approved a new policy permitting students to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in three years, with as few as 90 credit hours instead of the standard 120.
While supporters state the new policy could help students graduate sooner with less debt, critics are concerned that shortening the amount of time spent in college could affect students’ overall educational experience.
However, for the time being, the policy does not immediately create a three-years Bachelor’s program in Tennessee, as interested colleges must first submit proposals demonstrating academic quality and workforce demand before receiving approval from THEC.
Currently, the University of Memphis is reviewing the feasibility of a three-year Bachelor’s Degree program for interested students.
