Nike could be moving out of Memphis and closing its locations on Lamar Ave and Shelby Drive, but such changes would not take effect until the end of next year.
According to a recent memo from Nike, as part of a multi-phase operation, work could be transferred from Shelby County to a new distribution center in Atlanta, Georgia “to strengthen and streamline our operations through supply chain rebalancing and consolidation.”
While Nike’s memo makes no mention of their site in Raleigh being affected, it was tragically reported earlier this year that 600 layoffs occurred at both the Raleigh and Shelby Drive locations.
“I hope that we can make sure that we keep people that are employed with Nike employed,” said Memphis TN State Representative Antonio Parkinson. “Hopefully permanently, not through temps and give people an opportunity at improving their quality of life.”
