An injunction motion contesting the legitimacy of Tennessee’s new, Republican-leaning congressional map was denied by a federal three-judge panel.
The ruling puts an end to many court cases that were started after the Tennessee General Assembly divided Memphis into three different voting districts during a quick three-day special session in May.
The ACLU of Tennessee and Memphis Clergy Members filed the lawsuit, but the panel determined that they were unable to demonstrate that the map was created with racial animosity or that their First Amendment rights were violated.
The decision comes after Democratic congressional candidates voluntarily dropped a different redistricting case in June.
Congressman Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) declared he will not seek reelection amid the ongoing political shifts.
