A bill for the state to establish an oversight board for Memphis Shelby County Schools was approved by the Tennessee State Senate on Wednesday.
It was a 27-6 vote. The House will now have a final vote on the bill.
This follows the discovery of $1.1 million in apparent waste and abuse at MSCS in a forensic audit report.
Additionally, a bill prohibiting school board members from suing the state over accountability measures with public funds was just signed by Governor Bill Lee on Tuesday.
Six of the six requirements for state intervention are met, according to the bill. These include low academics to findings in a forensic audit of the district, and pointing to evidence of mismanagement.
