70 years ago on this day, April 21, 1956, Elvis Presley scored his first #1 hit with “Heartbreak Hotel,” which was also the first song he released with his new record label, RCA.
While he originally recorded with Sun Studios in the Bluff City, owner Sam Phillips sold Elvis’ contract to RCA when he sensed that his record label for too small for the up and coming star to shine.
And so, Phillips’ decision, along with the success of “Heartbreak Hotel,” would elevate Elvis Presley to the top and earn him the title of “The King of Rock & Roll.”
