On this day in 1954, the up-and-coming Elvis Presley performed one of his first gigs at the grand opening of a Memphis drug store atop the back of a flatbed truck.
Joining Presley were guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, the three of whom just weeks earlier recorded the hit song “Blue Moon of Kentucky” at Sun Studio, which would be a critical catalyst for the rockabilly movement.
And from these humble beginnings, The King would go on to gain international stardom just two years later, proving that history often begins on the smallest stages.
