The air conditioning issues at the county jail downtown were addressed by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
Temporary chillers have been installed, according to the sheriff’s office, but they never know which piece of equipment could malfunction next.
The sheriff’s office claims to have been “relentless” in requesting that the facility be repaired by the mayor’s office.
This week, jail employees wrote to county officials pleading for assistance, claiming that malfunctioning air systems have caused temperatures to rise into the upper 80s and 90s, resulting in heat exhaustion for both staff and inmates.
