Today marks the 230th birthday of Tennessee, as it was admitted to the Union on June 1, 1796 as the 16th state.
Tennessee is unique in that it was the first federal territory to actively apply to Congress for statehood, although its path to statehood was met with fierce opposition.
Originally, the state capitol was located in Knoxville from 1796 to 1812, with Nashville becoming the permanent capitol in 1843.
Tennessee earned its official nickname, “The Volunteer State,” due to thousands of citizen-soldiers from the area who stepped up to serve America in her hour of need during the War of 1812.
