Today, the Bluff City honors the birthday of Morgan Freeman, who was born in Memphis in 1937 and spent much of his childhood in Mississippi.
Freeman would go on to become a mechanic in the US Air Force from 1955 to 1959 before pursuing a career in acting, finding a breakout role as Easy Reader in the 1970s educational TV show The Electric Company.
From there, Freeman would go on to star in such films as Glory and The Shawshank Redemption, eventually gaining an Academy Award win for his role in Million Dollar Baby.
Today, Freeman primarily resides on a ranch in Charleston, Mississippi, and even has a private pilot’s license,
