The United States Marine Corp is teaming up with one University of Memphis professor to improve training for its soldiers through the use of, surprisingly, video games!
Dr. Brandon Booth, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Memphis, has been working alongside professors from Virginia Tech to develop Project RCANE, a modified version of the popular video game series, “Call Of Duty,” to teach military members proper teamwork and communication skills under stress that’ll translate into their encounters in the non-digital world.
The program is currently being used by soldiers at the Marine Corps University in Quantico, Virginia, with developers saying that results so far have been overwhelmingly positive.
Researchers are hoping to expand their project to other military locations, and even believe something similar could be used to assist in training in the medical field.
