NBC News says the Trump administration has refunded about $100 billion in tariffs after the Supreme Court struck down duties imposed under emergency economic powers.
A court filing cited by NBC News shows that the refunds represent roughly 60% of the approximately $166 billion collected. The payments are being returned to importers that paid the tariffs before the court ruled that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act did not authorize the president to impose them.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is handling hundreds of thousands of refund claims involving millions of imported shipments. Some businesses are still waiting for payments because their claims remain under review or they have not provided the banking information needed to receive the money.
The ruling did not eliminate every tariff introduced by the administration. Duties imposed under other trade laws may remain in effect, while newer tariff measures are facing separate legal challenges.
The refund process marks a major financial consequence of the Supreme Court decision and continues to affect importers, federal agencies and U.S. trade policy.
