The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office announced on Thursday morning that a third emergency chiller had arrived at the main jail at 201 Poplar to assist in cooling the new jail annex.
This follows the sheriff’s office’s announcement on Wednesday that temperatures reached 92 degrees in some areas of the jail on Monday due to a severe cooling system malfunction.
Fourteen detainees needed medical assistance because of the heat, and five kitchen employees overheated and had to be sent home. One was admitted to the hospital for a short while.
To combat the intense heat, more fans, dehumidifiers, and rental portable air conditioners were brought in. Additionally, gatorades were given out all over the jail.
