On Wednesday, 80 Louisiana endangered pinesnakes were released into the Kisatchie National Forest by the Memphis Zoo and its partners.
According to the zoo, they have been releasing pinesnakes to aid in their restoration for the past two years.
The first release took place at the Louisiana-based Catahoula National Wildlife Refuge, which has been in operation since 2010.
In a statement, the zoo said, “Biologists and conservation professionals dispersed the snakes among 12 strategically selected locations, individually placing each snake into deep burrows and underground refuges to maximize its chance of survival in the wild.”
