After being found guilty of “jackpotting,” or reprogramming bank ATMs to distribute massive amounts of money, a man was sentenced to prison.
The Department of Justice says that Winder Alexander Canelon-Tiapa was living in Dallas, Texas, illegally. He was given a ten-month sentence with three years of supervised release.
Canelon-Tiapa was found guilty of effectively stealing $47,000 from Mississippi banks by traveling throughout the state and reprogramming bank ATMs with Darrin Daza-Segura.
According to the DOJ, “jackpotting” is a known crime that is frequently committed by members of the Tren de Araqua gang from Venezuela and is a major issue across the nation.
Canelon-Tiapa will be turned over to ICE for deportation after completing his prison sentence.
