The mayor of Shelby County is proposing a new school in northeast Memphis as well as a pay increase for staff without raising the property tax rate.
On Wednesday, Mayor Lee Harris proposed that the property tax rate for the upcoming fiscal year be lowered from the existing rate of $2.69 to $2.66.
A 1% raise for all employees is part of that proposal.
In addition, his budget proposal calls for an initial $11.9 million investment to build a school in Memphis’ Highland Heights community to replace the outdated Treadwell K–8.
