State Senator Brent Taylor is still pushing for a move to establish a local oversight committee, stating that he intends to further state intervention in Memphis-Shelby County Schools.
According to Taylor, he informed Senate leadership that he intends to propose the appointment of the MSCS Local Intervention Conference Committee by the state’s lieutenant governor on Monday on the Senate floor.
Taylor make the announcement on social media Sunday evening saying in part, “This will be the final step toward passage so we can finally fix our failing school system after decades of poor management and outcomes.”
This comes a few weeks after the state comptroller noted “widespread operational failures” in the school system in a section of an audit of MSCS that was made public.
According to the preliminary findings, auditors found around 200 financial issues in the district between July 2021 and June 2024.
