This morning, Colombia was struck by a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake around 7:34AM local time, with shaking reported across a wide swath of the country and surrounding regions.
The epicenter was located near San José del Palmar and likely occurred 60 to 70 miles below the surface, which would explain why shaking was felt as far away as other neighboring countries (since the deeper the earthquake the farther seismic waves can travel).
Today’s earthquake comes less than two months after an earthquake that devastated Venezuela, which killed thousands and caused massive damage.
Casualties, damage counts, and seismic data are continuing to be analyzed, and there is no definitive evidence at this point whether the recent earthquake in Venezuela may have triggered today’s earthquake in Colombia.
