On this day in 1954, Edwin Howard of the Memphis Press-Scimitar published an article that was to become the first press interview Elvis Presley ever gave.
The columnist had quickly spoken the day prior with the 19 year old Presley while he was on his lunch break, working as a truck driver for the company Crown Electric.
In his article, Howard would go on to write, “This boy has something that seems to appeal to everybody… equally popular on Popular, Folk and Race Record programs.”
Howard’s words would come to fruition as just two years later The King would rise to stardom, coincidentally, with Presley’s “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You” rising to number one on the Billboard Top 100 chart on this same day in 1956.
