Firefighters are continuing to monitor the former Somerville Elementary School building after battling a fire yesterday, temporarily forcing the closure of South Main Street and Churchill Street.
According to Fayette County Fire Chief Rich Hartfield, the school was still smoldering Sunday, therefore making it unsafe for firefighters to enter.
While the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, Fayette County Mayor Rhea “Skip” Taylor stated that sparks from fireworks are “high on the list” of probable causes.
