Around 4AM Sunday morning, accused 20 year old gunman Tyrin Johnson was shot by two TN National Guard members, who were assisting Memphis Police in the pursuit of the suspect as he was firing shots in the area.
According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the altercation took place at the intersection of Ida B. Wells Ave and Union Ave, where Johnson pointed his handgun at the two soldiers, at which point the situation escalated and led the National Guardsmen to fire their weapons.
While no National Guard members or Memphis Police officers were injured, Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.
The TBI is continuing to investigate the exact circumstances leading up to the shooting, with Memphis Mayor Paul Young stating:
“All Fourth of July events across Memphis were celebrated safely and successfully. This unfortunate incident occurred around 4 a.m., well after all festivities had concluded. The incident is under investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and we will allow that process to conclude before making additional comments.”
