According to county officials, Shelby County is creating new DNA and digital forensics tools to aid in crime solving.
On Thursday morning, Mayor Lee Harris stated that his office and the office of District Attorney Steve Mulroy are working together to develop a plan to provide the county with digital forensics and Rapid DNA capabilities.
The Rapid DNA approach may provide a profile from a mouth swab in one or two hours as opposed to weeks or months when employing conventional techniques.
According to Harris, the effort will assist in identifying suspects quicker, reduce case backlogs, improve solve rates, and eventually lower crime.
The mayor’s office wrote, “This investment strengthens Shelby County’s public safety infrastructure and gives law enforcement agencies the tools they need to fight crime effectively.”
