Memphis will be split into three congressional districts under the new U.S. House map that Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed into law on Thursday.
Despite irate protests at the Capitol, the Republican-led legislature ultimately approved the redistricting proposal, and Lee signed it shortly after.
Eight Republicans and one Democrat, Steve Cohen, who represents the majority-Black 9th Congressional District, make up Tennessee’s House representation. The new plan divides Shelby County, which is home to Memphis, into three districts that lean Republican.
This also comes after an announcement by Rep. Steve Cohen that he will be filing a lawsuit over redistricting.
