Joe Towns Jr. defeated Wanda Halbert by a mere 121 votes on Tuesday night in the Democratic primary for Criminal Court Clerk.
In the five-person election, Towns had 19,329 votes to Halbert’s 19,208 after 100% of the ballots were counted, despite with the results still unofficial as of Wednesday morning.
In the general election, the winner will take on Republican Edquardo Jamison.
Currently serving as Shelby County Clerk, Halbert was unable to run for the office again due to term limits.
Despite the fact that her tenure expires on September 1st, she is still facing an ouster attempt from her position as clerk; the trial is scheduled on August 24.
