A proposed map of the state’s new congressional districts has been made public by Tennessee Republicans.
The announcement coincides with the Tennessee General Assembly’s special session on redistricting at the State Capitol.
The proposed plan was made public by Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson and Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton on Wednesday morning, shortly before the Tennessee House of Representatives was scheduled to convene.
The new Ninth District would run along the Mississippi border from Whitehaven to rural Middle Tennessee, then north into the Nashville region.
The Eighth District, currently held by Republican David Kustoff, would lose some counties on its north and south.
Andy Ogles currently holds the landlocked Fifth District, which, in the proposed map, would stretch from its present borders in Middle Tennessee to include counties bordering Kentucky. It would then swing south in a narrow strip along the Mississippi River, including downtown Memphis, southwest Memphis, and Frayser.
