The most effective strategies to implement the city’s curfew law has been discussed by city officials.
Calls for an enforced curfew come just days after a 14-year-old boy was shot in Downtown Memphis, and a 17-year-old girl shot in broad daylight at Tom Lee Park.
According to witnesses, groups of teenagers were at the park on Tuesday afternoon for “senior skip day” when gunfire broke out. MPD has confirmed the victim is in stable condition.
Children under the age of sixteen are currently subject to curfews of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. during the week and 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekends.
“As the weather has changed, we have more and more young people that frequent our Downtown space. That can be good, and sometimes it can be bad, especially when we have young people that don’t necessarily have the proper guardianship in those spaces,” said Memphis Police Chief C.J. Davis.
