The Memphis-Shelby County School (MSCS) state takeover was signed into law on Friday morning by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee.
This follows the discovery of $1.1 million in waste and abuse in the school district’s forensic audit report from April.
It was approved by the Tennessee House and Senate towards the end of April and forwarded to Governor Lee’s office for final approval.
The vote in the House was 73-19. In the State Senate, the result was 27-6.
The present elected body will lose most of its power as a result of the ratified bill, which will install nine new members with budgetary and contracting authority.
