Tony Carruthers, a death row convict from Tennessee, was scheduled to be put to death by lethal injection on Thursday morning after Governor Bill Lee declined to step in and stop his death sentence on Tuesday.
There is still no confirmation on if it was carried out or halted.
Carruthers has spent more than 30 years on death row after being found guilty in a kidnapping and murder case in Memphis in 1996.
In 1994, Delouis Anderson, her son Marcellos Anderson, and a friend Frederick Tucker were abducted, tortured, and buried alive by Tony Carruthers and his accomplice James Montgomery.
After more than 30 years on death row, he was scheduled for death at 10 a.m., despite a concerted attempt by family, the ACLU, religious leaders, and community residents to halt the fatal injection.
