On this day 60 years ago in 1966, The Beatles performed two shows back-to-back at the Mid-South Coliseum.
Interestingly, this concert took place after John Lennon’s controversial remarks that The Beatles were “more popular than Jesus,” which would explain why protestors set up shop outside of the Coliseum.
To matters more stressful, during their evening performance, a firecracker was thrown on to the stage, which left the band shaken as they feared it was a gunshot or assassination attempt.
Incidents like this likely contributed to The Beatles deciding not to tour commercially anymore ten days later.
