In addition to Memphis International Airport being renamed to Frederick W. Smith International Airport, the Bluff City further honored FedEx’s late great founder and his company with the unveiling of a new mural along Plough Blvd.
Over the course of a quarter mile, said mural depicts both Smith and FedEx’s beginnings while also looking hopefully towards the company’s future.
Designed by FedEx’s marketing department (in collaboration with artists organized by the nonprofit Paint Memphis), the mural was completed in a record three weeks.
“It’s absolutely gorgeous,” said Karen Golightly, project manager and founder of Paint Memphis. “It’s like the welcome mat when you come into Memphis, and then it’s the last thing you see when you leave,.”
