After turning herself in at the federal courtroom in Memphis, Shelby County General Sessions Court Clerk Tami Sawyer was charged with wire fraud and money laundering.
Sawyer was released on her own recognizance after entering a not guilty plea to all counts. She must surrender her passport and must receive approval before she opens any lines of credit. Any violations will result in her being taken into custody.
Sawyer allegedly embezzled $44,607.35 in public funds for her personal use between August 29, 2024, when she took office, through June 22, 2025, according to the prosecution. Most of it was used for food delivery, restaurants, alcohol, and other personal expenses.
Sawyer may spend up to 20 years behind bars if found guilty of every charge.
