The official body camera footage of the Kohen Wiley shooting has been released by Mississippi officials.
Both surveillance clips show the moments on June 14 when Wiley was shot by police as his mother and another woman were escaping police custody after shoplifting.
According to the video, the driver backs up violently as she tries to evade arrest, hitting several cars in the Walmart parking lot. As police surround the front of the vehicle, she accelerates forward, nearly running over officers which prompted the gunfire.
Prior to the video release, the shooting was already deemed “justified” by the Mississippi A.G.
Following the leaked body-cam footage of the Kohen Wiley fatal shooting, the family members and Attorney Ben Crump held a press conference on Thursday stating that the crime of shoplifting didn’t justify the murder of a baby.
“We have made these observations: That this was excessive from the very start. I mean, they came out with guns drawn for a shoplifting misdemeanor?” Crump said. “Shoplifting diapers is a misdemeanor. It doesn’t warrant the death penalty.”
