News Talk 989 would like to congratulate the University of Memphis’ Music Business Program for being named one of Billboard’s top global music business programs for 2026.
What separates the UofM’s program from the rest of the pack is not only its Scheidt Family Music Center but also its complete immersion program for students in every aspect of the music industry.
Not only do students learn how music is created, but they are also taught how to properly market themselves as artists and are even given opportunities to gain hands-on experience from local industry leaders and music festivals that are hosted in town.
“The industry is about who you know. It’s what you know, too, but it’s really who you know,” said Area Coordinator Jeff Cohran. “Being able to connect [students] with mentors helps them, you know, shave years off of their career.”
Commenting on the humbling recognition received by Billboard, Assistant Professor Kyle Jones said, “This award and the work that the students are doing, it tells the outside world, yeah, you know Memphis for its storied past with the music industry. But it’s not just the past. It’s the music that’s happening right now.”
