After the failed attempt to carry out her execution, Christa Pike has been discharged from the area hospital and returned to the women’s prison she has spent the last 30 years on death row.
Saturday morning around 11, her attorney released the following statement-
“Christa Pike was discharged from a local hospital and is now at Deborah K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center where she has been housed for more than 30 years. She is grateful to the first responders and her medical team for their care in these extraordinary circumstances. She is continuing to receive medical care at the prison, and we will continue to track her recovery.”
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee halted all sheduled executions the remainder of the year while the state investigates why Pike’s execution failed. She would have been the third women executed in Tennessee. The first two where carried out successully in 1807 and 1819. The governor has not stated whether he plans to grant a request by Pike’s attorney to commute her death penalty sentence for life in prison.
