Fans of Demarcus Dickerson, a.k.a. the “Gatorade Man,” were delighted to see their beloved entrepreneur return to work yesterday at the corner of Poplar Ave and East Parkway, selling his titular beverage once more to passengers commuting through the busy intersection.
Earlier this week, Dickerson was arrested and charged with obstructing the passageway, but he was released by Wednesday after said charges were dropped.
Since then, the “Gatorade Man” has received an outpouring of community support, with the organization We Fight Monsters stating in a social media post that they and local churches are not only hooking Dickerson up with a new car but are also getting him in touch with financial literacy and entrepreneurship coaching to help his work become a licensed business.
We Fight Monsters co-founder Ben Owen said that this outpouring of support behind Dickenson is one of his favorite things about Memphis, stating, “Events like this unite our community around a neighbor struggling in ways few other things can!”
