Yesterday evening, residents of Walls, MS gathered for a town hall meeting within a school gym, to voice their concerns regarding a massive rezoning request.
According to the city’s board of commissioners, resident Robert Abbey is asking for 1,200 acres of property his family owns to be converted from agricultural usage to “light utility.”
However, Abbey’s fellow residents are worried this “light utility” might mean the development of a data center, which many fear could not only impact their families but also local wildlife.
“Some states are already putting moratoriums in on this kind of activity so they have time to research it and put the proper safeguards to keep it from happening. This is not a political issue. It’s happening in Democratic states with Democratic governors. It’s happening in Republican states with Republican governors,” said Walls citizen Matt Lipscomb.
The Abbey family, however, says they want to rezone their land to improve Walls, with landowner William Abbey stating, “For 30 years we watched Tunica County flourish. Casino activity, revenue, and what did we get from that traffic? The commute and pollute, not a single dollar of revenue for this town.”
No verdict by the city’s board of commissioners has been reported at this time.
