Law enforcement in Shelby County will soon be receiving four new RapidHIT ID DNA testing machines that will help close cases faster and expedite the backlog of cases the county faces.
Unlike current DNA tech that takes months to get results, these new machines create a DNA profile from a mouth swab in just 90 minutes.
“This is all about solving crimes, solving them faster and getting the right assailant, getting them off the street and getting them behind bars,” said outgoing Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris. “This will enable law enforcement to just turbo charge their investigations to very quickly and reliably identify their suspects or in some cases eliminate and exonerate some suspects.”
The District Attorney’s Office said they are expecting these four new machines to begin operation by the end of the year, with D.A. Steve Mulroy stating, “We spend so many millions of dollars a year on prisons and jails and all the other things we do on the back end to deal with the crime problem. This investment is a great investment on the front end to solve more crimes.”
