The execution of Tony Carruthers is scheduled for Thursday, and Tennessee Governor Bill Lee stated this morning that he has no intention of stopping it.
After being found guilty in a 1994 kidnapping and murder case in Memphis, Carruthers has been on death row for more than 30 years.
In 1996, Carruthers and James Montgomery, his accused accomplice, were found guilty of kidnapping, torturing, and burying alive a woman, her son, and his friend.
Lee said in a statement released at 11:30 Tuesday morning. “After deliberate consideration of Tony Von Carruthers’ request for clemency, and after a thorough review of the case, I am upholding the sentence of the State of Tennessee and do not plan to intervene.”
