According to Congressman Steve Cohen, the state’s proposed intervention in Memphis-Shelby County Schools a “done deal.”
Cohen stated that although he had not seen an audit of the educational system, he had heard that it did not look good for local schools.
Legislation to establish an oversight board for the local school district is being drafted this year by Republican state legislators, including state senator Brent Taylor.
Taylor described the concept as the educational version of the Memphis Safe Task Force.
A new proposal to revitalize the school district and boost transparency while retaining local control over school decisions was unveiled by MSCS officials last Friday.
MSCS schools have long been plagued by low test scores, graduation and readiness rates.
All this has also been coupled with the controversial firing last year of former Superintendent Marie Feagins.
