The Memphis City Council did not approve a 2% wage increase for Memphis firefighters on Tuesday.
The ruling comes after the Memphis Fire Fighters Association sued the city for breach of contract in July after the council did not include the 2% wage increase in its latest budget.
At a time when the city already has a $7 million deficit, the wage rise would cost the city roughly $1.7 million.
“My job is to fight for the firefighters and their rights and that body in there gave them the raise, that body decided to take it back, that’s what this is all about,” said Thomas Malone, Pres. Memphis Fire Fighters Association.
