Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris has declared a local state of emergency for the protection of the public health, safety, and welfare of Memphis residents.
According to Mayor Harris, law enforcement agencies and municipal governments have been warned to anticipate an increase in arrests at approximately 200% of the existing daily rates due to the surge in law enforcement activities.
This all follows the announcement of a Presidential Memorandum titled “Restoring Law and Order in Memphis” by President Trump.
According to Mayor Harris, all detention facilities are operating at maximum capacity with a shortage of staff, and “the current and physical resources cannot support the proposed impact of the federal operations.”
