LOCAL | Summer Drive-In Closing

In a statement from the owners of Summer Drive-in Malco Theaters, it’s the end of an era. This Saturday will be the last day of operations for the iconic drive-in theater on Summer Ave.

“We know the Drive-In is beloved by a lot of people, including everyone at Malco” said David Tashie, President and COO, “and harbors wonderful memories for generations of Memphians. Unfortunately, the location hasn’t been sustainable for a long time, and we’ve come to the end of an era. While it won’t be a drive-in going forward, we are confident that it will be repurposed into a use that will benefit the community.”

Memphis Morning News’ Ditch & Tim Van Horn spoke with Stephanie Hall in April about the looming closure of the drive-in. Ms. Hall lived at the drive-in until age 15 while her dad worked there and the family resided in the 3 bedroom apartment about the snack bar.
