Video surveillance was released of the fatal downtown Memphis shooting of Tyrin Johnson over the summer.
It was released by the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office on Monday, deliberately, as to not disturb the TBI’s investigation.
Johnson was shot and killed in the early morning hours of July 4, 2026, by a single bullet that entered his back and exited through his upper chest. Officials have reported that as Johnson was fleeing from law enforcement, he turned towards Guard members with a gun while running from them.
According to a statement released by D.A. Steve Mulroy’s office along with the videos, this is what happened July 5:
On July 5, 2026, two officers of the Memphis Police Department (MPD) heard shots fired in the downtown entertainment zone. The officers observed a subject, later identified as Tyrin Johnson, zig-zagging and ducking in the area of the gunfire. The officers called to Mr. Johnson but began evading on foot. He was pursued by the MPD officers and National Guard members of the SafeStreet Force. After Mr. Johnson turned onto Union Avenue, National Guard members Alyssa Hout and Dallas Jellnick fired shots at Mr. Johnson. Mr. Johnson died at the scene from a gunshot wound, which entered in the back and exited the front chest.
