For 12,000 Memphians, millions of dollars in medical debt will be canceled according to an announcement by City Hall on Tuesday.
The cancelation will only apply to certain medical cases that are benefitting from a partnership between a city council member and a non-profit organization that will result in those debts being paid off for them.
Councilwoman and gubernatorial candidate Jerri Green is utilizing over $150,000 of her $200,000 in grant funds in collaboration with Undue Medical Debt to purchase and cancel medical debt for qualifying cases.
More than $17M in debt were canceled as a result. The rest of the grant money went toward MLGW and their Utility Assistance Program.
