After Federal Judge Waverly Crenshaw temporarily blocked the overight board on July 1st, he changed his ruling and has now given the state oversight board the green light to move forward, MSCS is trying again to stop it with another lawsuit. This time, the school baord claims that the takeover bill passed by the state, violates the state constitution. MSCS board claims that the bill specificially, unfairly targeted Memphis and Shelby Coounty schools. The bill, signed by Govenor Bill Lee in May, gives the oversight board authority to make changes to any school district in the state that doesn’t meet basic requirements. Memphis-Shelby County Schools has underperformed for years with 75% of students failing to meet basic proficiency in the last two. Tasked with reviewing and overssing the districts shoortcomings, the nine member oversight board will create a plan for improvement. That plan allows all neccessary changes in operatioons, staff, financial and acedemic.
Meanwhile, MSCS continues to focus on blocking the attempts by the state to use the legal oversight board as an additional resource to improve the districts performance.
