Passionate protesters made their concerns known during last night’s city council meeting, where the vote on a one-year moratorium on data centers was delayed.
As this is a topic of great debate throughout the country, Memphis City Council members felt it best to take more time to consider the ramifications of a moratorium for the city.
This delay in voting has been met with criticism, with Memphis State Representative Justin J. Pearson stating, “I’m very disappointed by the council’s actions to not allow for public comment before that motion was made by Councilman Carlisle. There are ways to make sure that the public’s voices get heard, but they didn’t want to hear from the public today.”
Memphis Mayor Paul has acknowledged the profitability of data centers for the city but believes proper regulations are needed to ensure the wellbeing of his constituents.
