On this day in 1967, former Memphis Mayor William Ingram and Tennessee Governor Buford Ellington designated this day to henceforth be known as “Elvis Presley Day” in both the city and the state.
Not only was this day initiated to honor the musical legacy of The King but also his charitable contributions to the area, as he frequently donated to local organizations such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
In gratitude for the recognition, Presley, funnily enough, named one of his horses Mare Ingram in the Mayor’s honor.
