The University of Memphis is one of only three areas in the entire country that is assisting the FDA in conducting research that will hopefully lead to new hearing aid technology to coming on the market.
The University of Memphis Hearing Aid Research Lab is currently testing models of Samsung Galaxy Buds that can be converted to help people with hearing loss, using a state-of-the-art anechoic chamber to assist in their research.
“You know this is about communication, but it’s also about connectedness, and it’s about identity and it’s about social-emotional well-being,” said Dr. Jani Johnson, Director of the Hearing Aid Research Lab. “There are so many stigmas related to wearing hearing aids and being associated with aging and those kinds of stigmas prevent people from jumping into what is essentially a life-changing kind of behavior.”
Dr. Johnson sees a great deal of hope with the rapid advancement of technology that can change the lives of those with hearing loss for the better.
