During a Board of Aldermen meeting on Tuesday, Senatobia Police Chief Harold Vanderford was fired with immediate effect.
According to Alderman Chris McConnell, the board decided to fire Chief Vanderford rather than accept his own resignation.
Angelica Maze has been named interim police chief.
Due to claims that Vanderford used racist language in over a dozen text messages, community leaders have been putting pressure on the city of Senatobia to fire Vanderford.
“The reports of racist language within the Senatobia Police Department are reprehensible and make the continued secrecy and lack of cooperation surrounding Kohen’s death even more unacceptable,” attorney Ben Crump said in a statement.
