Memphis Mayor Paul Young and the leader of the city’s public utility have stated that they will exert pressure on xAI to complete the construction of the promised wastewater recycling facility, which is reportedly on hold.
Instead of using the local drinking water aquifer to cool the servers in one of xAI’s Memphis data centers, the $80 million complex was designed to use recycled water from a nearby treatment plant.
“Promises to this community are not optional. A wastewater facility is about protecting our water and our future. I will continue pressing xAI to deliver,” Mayor Paul Young said in a social media post Friday.
Elon Musk stated on X on Thursday that the company decided to finish its Colossus 2 data center first. The company has built or is building two data centers in Memphis and a third nearby in DeSoto County.
Despite this, the business is still dedicated to completing the wastewater recycling project.
