A bill mandating that the Shelby County district attorney inform state and federal authorities of specific arrests made in the county was passed by the Tennessee House.
The Memphis Safe Task Force Accountability Act mandates that the D.A. provide information regarding cases that result in a reduced charge, a plea deal, or a dismissal.
According to Shelby County D.A. Steve Mulroy, the bill distracts from other duties like preparing for a trial and helping victims by producing unnecessary paperwork.
The House bill was sponsored by John Gillespie and the Senate version was sponsored by Republican Brent Taylor.
This goes back to February when State Senator Taylor demanded explanations in a letter to Mulroy regarding the low number of felony cases in Memphis criminal court that resulted in actual sentences.
